The History of Israel and Judah

The Sunday evening Bible study at Valley Church just completed its series on the Sermon on the Mount class. The class meets Sundays 6:30-8pm in room 3191. All are welcome. On June 10, 2012, this class will begin a series on the history of Israel and Judah. It will be a fast-paced class, requiring that the reading of the texts be done at home, before class, by each student. It's about 600 pages, a large book. No one will be denied participation, or even hounded, if they don't do the reading. However, all will be strongly encouraged to do the reading. That is the primary content of the class. The course syllabus will be continually updated as the class is developed. The class members are still discussing the exact scope we want for the class, as well as its pace (therefore duration). As class leader, I prefer around 10 sessions. For a reasonably good, disciplined reader, that would take about an hour a week. Extending the class over 20 weeks drops the time commitment outside of class to about half an hour a week. The class itself meets 90 minutes per week. Tim Gildersleeve suggests the book A Harmony of Samuel, Kings, and Chronicles, by William Day Crockett. It's available from Amazon. For study ideas beyond the class, students might want to follow these class notes. These public-domain references are helpful:

The plan for the class up to that time:

  • May 6 and May 13: Frank Nemec will resume his earlier overview of the religious thought heritage of Christianity. A focus will be on the wisdom literature. The class will decide whether we intend to meet on May 13 (Mother's Day).
  • May 20, May 27, and June 3: Mike Nelson will lead the Bible study, with topics to be announced.
